Characters

Taran

The son of Aedan and Maeli, Taran dreams of seeing the world beyond the familiar roads of home. Intelligent, adventurous, and endlessly curious, Taran is more comfortable bargaining in a foreign market than settling into a predictable life. Yet beneath his love of travel lies a loneliness he rarely acknowledges. When a journey across the desert introduces him to a woman unlike any he has ever known, he finds himself forced to choose between the freedom he has always desired and the possibility of something more lasting.

Maired

The spirited daughter of Maeli and Aedan. Intelligent, restless, and often frustrated by the endless responsibilities of life at the family caupona, Maired dreams of a wider world beyond kitchens and guest rooms. Still grieving the loss of her father, she struggles to find her place while discovering that growing up often brings complications far greater than she imagined.

Riva

The daughter of Cador and a woman caught between two worlds. Raised among the Caledonians, Riva inherited her father's loyalty, stubbornness, and fierce devotion to family. She has dark-blonde hair, dark brown eyes, and a quiet resilience forged by hardship.

When tragedy destroys everything she has built, Riva finds herself facing the impossible. Her father is dead, her husband Eiran is dead, her village has been destroyed, and her young son Artor has been taken by raiders. Rather than surrender to grief, she embarks on a desperate journey driven by a mother's determination to reclaim her child.

Llyr

The son of Seren and Owain, Llyr has inherited his mother's warmth and optimism. Good-natured, energetic, and quick to find joy even in difficult circumstances, he often serves as a source of encouragement for those around him. Beneath his easy smile, however, lies a young man learning what it means to carry responsibility and make sacrifices for the people he loves.

Unlike many of the larger-than-life figures in his family, Llyr is approachable and relatable. He is not driven by dreams of glory or adventure, but by loyalty, friendship, and the desire to build a meaningful life. As new challenges arise at Caerwyn, Llyr discovers that courage is not always found on a battlefield. Sometimes it is found in quiet acts of faithfulness and perseverance.

Samira

The daughter of a Nabataean caravan leader, Samira has spent her life crossing deserts and living beneath canvas tents. Quietly capable and fiercely competent, she manages animals, supplies, and people with a confidence that commands respect. Though bound by the customs of her people, she possesses a strength and independence that immediately captures Taran's attention. As danger and hardship draw them together, she must decide how much she is willing to risk for a future she never expected.

Marcus

The son of a Roman centurion and an unexpected source of excitement in Maired's increasingly complicated life. Charming, confident, and sometimes more talkative than necessary, Marcus possesses a sincerity that gradually wins her trust. Their growing relationship forces both young people to confront questions about family, loyalty, and the future.

Litana

A young woman whose arrival brings both hope and uncertainty, Litana possesses a quiet strength that is easy to overlook. Intelligent, compassionate, and determined, she has endured hardship without allowing it to harden her heart. Though she often appears reserved at first, those who earn her trust discover a fiercely loyal and caring person beneath the surface.

As her relationship with Llyr develops, Litana becomes an important part of the growing Caerwyn family. She must navigate questions of belonging, identity, and the future while deciding whether she can truly make a home among people whose lives have been shaped by very different experiences. Her journey is one of healing, acceptance, and finding where she belongs.
